Student Company GrowGreen wins two Awards at the Largest Student Entrepreneurship Competition in Europe

GrowGreen, a Student Company from the English School Nicosia, represented Cyprus at the Company of the Year Competition organized by Junior Achievement Europe, which took place in Brussels between 11 and 13 July 2017.

Over 200 students, representing 37 student-teams, gathered in Brussels to celebrate the top JA companies from across Europe. The 2-day competition was attended by 700 people, including His Majesty the King of the Belgians. Last school year, the JA Company Programme counted over 300,000 participating students across 40 countries in Europe. Through the process of learning to run a company from top to bottom, JA Company Programme students create and market real products and services.

GrowGreen was awarded the FedEx Access Award, which recognises student-run businesses that best exhibit the principles of global connectivity. Additionally, GrowGreen CEO, Irene Andreou received the JA Alumni Leadership Award, which is presented to individuals demonstrating outstanding leadership skills affecting their team and their company.

Eloiza Savvidou, JA Cyprus CEO noted, “These are two very prestigious awards and this demonstrates that, with the right support and environment, Cypriot students have the entrepreneurial talent and skills needed to excel at a European level competition”.

Tefkros Chimonas, GrowGreen student noted, “The competition was one of the most treasured experiences we have encountered so far and is going to stay in our minds as an amazing memory. We acquired skills that would have been difficult to gain from any other experience in our lives and we are more than grateful that we got involved and never gave up”.

GrowGreen won this year’s Company of the Year Competition organized by JA Cyprus in April. The company created a biodegradable plant pot called “the green box” using coffee waste. The pot can be planted directly into the soil as it biodegrades and the coffee acts as a fertilizer for the plant.
